Description
As I cleaned up and enhanced this centuries-old map of North America I noticed several interesting things. First, California is drawn as an island separated from the mainland by the “Mer Vermeille” (the Vermillion Sea). Apparently, no one had bothered to sail far enough to the north to check it out. Second, at least half of what is now the eastern United States and portion of today’s Canada are called “Canada or New France.” Third, Florida extents all the way to the Mississippi. Fourth, Mexico and Central America are collectively called New Spain. Fifth, New Mexico extends indefinitely to the north. Sixth, there is no mention of the Dutch colonies, and Britain is referenced only above New France in Labrador. Finally, the Pacific Ocean is called the South Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean is called the North Sea.
The entire map was rendered by hand, right down to the lettering. And if you look carefully at the top of “New Mexico,” you can see the original artist’s brush strokes.
