Description
Once again i am struck at how ideal the east coast is for docking and shipping. Coves, bays sounds and capes appear at regular intervals either to ship out or to receive goods and services. Two obvious examples are Cape Cod with its "hook" providing protection from the Atlantic's frequent temper tantrums; and the entirely of Long Island's shores. No wonder these areas became prosperous and led the rest of the country financially and culturally.
Railroads were an important part of this success. Just look at the maze of railways that appear as veins carrying nutrients to every part of the states' body. In 1853 you didn't drive your car or fly to your destination. No, you took that high-tech machine known as the train, cowcatcher and all, at the breakneck speeds of 50, 60 and 75 miles-per-hour! Whew! Life got real fast seemingly overnight.
