Description
The title of this map translates as: "Map of the United States of Mexico." Issued in 1847, the Mexican-American War (1846-48) was still being fought in one-sided battles that America consistently won.
Our map shows us, first of all, the total catastrophe the war was for Mexico. 55% of its territory was ceded to America. 2. The war was, in today's jargon, a war of choice. President James Polk was totally infected with the ideology called Manifest Destiny. That is, that the United States of America was destined (by God? by hubris?) to extend from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. Using this mental construct as a philosophical base, he sent in the Army and simply stole the land from Mexico. 3. The Treaty of Guadaloupe-Hildalgo, however, allowed the people now living in the seized lands to keep their language (mostly Spanish) and culture. Perhaps America really is, by treaty, a multilingual country after all.
