Description
Obviously not a map, I decided to include this painting in this collection since it shows how the earliest trains were powered. Teams of horses (or mules or people) pulled these cars, and our painting shows a terminal with a hotel on its second floor.
There are a lot of things going on in front of and around the terminal as well. 1. A fresh team of horses awaits being harnessed to the car; 2. In the upper right some people are taking a hot air balloon ride; 3. People are looking out the hotel's windows onto the street; 4. A platoon of soldiers is marching in-step up the hill on the middle left; 5. Army officers are riding in the street and one is talking with civilians; 5. A street vendor is selling cut flowers; 7. A man is shovelling manure off the street; 8. There is only one black person in this picture, a man whitewashing light posts. He is dressed in rags. Is there a social/economic/racial message here?
