Description
The title for this map contains two terms which may cause some confusion. The first, "canals," is probaably not familiar to modern travelers. But (water) canals were among the first means of transporting people and goods to almost any place in the eastern half of the US. A shallow bottom barge could float, say, your timber consignment all the way from northern Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico faster and cheaper than hauling it overland.
The second term, "stage road," may not ring a bell in your mind either, As a boy raised on Hopalong Cassidy and Roy Rogers movies a stage coach seems as common as a freeway today. Stage coaches went long distances in, well, stages—stages that were dictated by the endurance of a team of horses. "Stage roads" were the ways chosen for their (relatively) smooth ride and were located a reasonable distance from each other for fresh horse teams. I won't say it was a pleasant ride, but it sure beat walking.
