Description
Named for its appearance to stately public buildings, the Capitol Reef seems to erupt suddenly out of the flat plain in front of it. Multiple colored layers of sandstone that were laid down over millions of years were uplifted by a fault in the crust many miles below. Water erosion then did its creative work for us to admire.
I chose to make this poster as a woodcut or etching. This approach brought out the details in the layers while preserving the muted colors of the sandstone. Working on this poster made me want to go to see it in person.
The use of "reef" may be confusing. A reef is a geological formation that hinders travel. A coral reef will prevent people from getting to the shore. Capitol Reef was a serious obstacle to land travel in the 19th century.
