Description
Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness Study Area is an extremely remote part of Northwest New Mexico. Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah is Navajo for "salt gray." And in other part of the Study Area the mud deposits are quite pale with a small grain texture. Many, as in this poster, have a reddish cap of sandstone that both resisted the erosion process and protected the softer mudstone beneath.
By the way, these structures are called "hoodoos." They are very similar in shape and origin to the hoodoos of Bryce Canyon, only smaller and less abundant. If you are intrigued enough to travel to them, be prepared for long stretches of undeveloped (i.e., dirt) roads and high temperatures in summer.
