Artist's Description
I had to restore this map. I was born in Los Angeles and would occasionally drive north along a highway (now a freeway) called the Grapevine. All along the way was at least one, and often, 2-3 southbound trackbeds taking agricultural products to LA via Fresno or Bakersfield; and along the same tracks—this time northbound to deliver freight from manufacturers located in greater Los Angeles. Although trucks started to displace trains, railroads can haul huge loads of products far more efficiently and often faster.
Our map shows the Southern Union Railroad and its connections as it was on our country's centennial, 1876. The colors show the boundaries of the large counties in California.
About Chuck Mountain
Chuck's creative background is wide and varied. He was a professional violinist, a published author, a multilingual graphic designer, a community college teacher, a Lutheran (ELCA) pastor, and a book designer (interior and covers). As a result, his work could be broadly categorized as digital art. His graphic design influences his digital art; and his digital art has features of his design work. In other words, they overlap. Someone put it this way: "What you do is not traditional art, and it isn't strictly graphic design. It's somewhere in-between." Chuck says he couldn't have said it better.
