Description
Like most railroads in the 20th century, Union Pacific was the result of several struggling railroads, thus, "union." 1. The first thing about this map is that its routes are concentrated in the West. By the 1880s railroads had seen the economic potential of the land west of the continental divide, and began to build extensive railroad infrastructure: tracks, bridges, tunnels and cuts—often through mountain granite—and newly built towns.
2. Our map has insets of various locations along the train's route. Among them are Yellowstone and Salt Lake City.
