Description
"Air Line" might have seemed odd when you read it for the first time. But this is twenty years before the Wright brothers accomplished the first powered flight. Air Line is part of the advertising hype for the railroad. The term wanted to communicate that this railroad would go "straight as an arrow through the air," or something like that. What I found very attractive about this map-poster are the abstract lines and shapes the tracks made, the subtle colors, not even to mention the 19th century typography. I count at least 7 different fonts in a few lines on the bottom right, and there are many more I no doubt missed. (My graphic design instructors are getting a migraine just looking at this, Modernists the core.) Nonetheless, the typography is treated creatively with three-dimensional lettering, placing letters on a curve, and mixing in a lot of curly decoration.
