Description
I truncated the original title for this piece which ran thus: "Map of the Pittsburg(sic), Fort Wayne and Chicago, Cleveland and Pittsburg(sic), Grand Rapids and Indiana and Pennsylvania Railroads." Notice that every company or group of companies has their own typeface. You really don't need commas to separate the names of these railroads. And if you had any doubt about these businesses working together, just look at the map again These railways create a spider's web of trunk lines, whistle stops, and branches stretching from St. Louis to Chicago to Mackinaw to Pittsburgh to New York. As a graphic designer I'm really struck by the sheer number and variety of fonts used. Somehow the compositors made these type-drawer emptying names hang together in an interesting way. I wonder if this trend will return, now that over 200,000 exist electronically today. (By the way, Pittsburgh is misspelled twice on the inset.)
