Artist's Description
It's surprising how many railroad terms remain in everyday speech. The title of this piece, "Making the Grade," is one example. In railway terms it means that the train can "haul" its load of freight or passengers up a "steep grade," "making smoke" all the way. Of course, to do this it needs to "stay on track", avoiding being "side tracked," or "switched" onto the wrong track. It's also good to "let off some steam" to avoid the boiler from blowing up, and to be ready for "the long haul." Well, that is enough. My reaction to steam trains is aesthetic: They are essentially ugly, but they do it so beautifully.
About Chuck Mountain
Chuck's creative background is wide and varied. He was a professional violinist, a published author, a multilingual graphic designer, a community college teacher, a Lutheran (ELCA) pastor, and a book designer (interior and covers). As a result, his work could be broadly categorized as digital art. His graphic design influences his digital art; and his digital art has features of his design work. In other words, they overlap. Someone put it this way: "What you do is not traditional art, and it isn't strictly graphic design. It's somewhere in-between." Chuck says he couldn't have said it better.
