Description
I have a personal memory of the Grand Canyon. When I was 16 my dad and I hiked from the south rim of the canyon to the bottom. Although something less than a mile deep where the trail started, it was many swish back miles to the bottom. It took us 8 hours to hike to the river and 6 hours to hike back to the rim. Why the time difference? Because the trail is steep and we were constantly braking our forward fall with our calf and lower thigh muscles. On the way out we could use our total complement of leg muscles.
One of the more anxious aspects of the trail was when mules wanted to pass us. The mules with their load of people or equipment had the right-of-way. We had to stand on the outer edge of the trail with nothing between us and the bottom but thin desert air. Pretty exciting.
