Description
De Stijl (The Style) was an art movement and philosophy that flourish in the Netherlands from 1917-1931 (at least). The background design for De Stijl was traced directly from a sketch by Theo van Doesburg. The names in the black bars are graphic designers, artists and architects that identified with De Stijl.
I think that one of the main reasons the rectangular shapes were attractive to Dutch artists was the landscape of Holland. Space is limited and often reclaimed from the sea, so farmland is divided into squares and rectangles, a ready-made template.
