Artist's Description

In spite of its German sounding name, this steam engine is English and carried passengers in luxurious comfort from Scotland to London and vice versa in the early 20th century. Another manufacturer called the similar design "Mallard" because of the obvious correspondence between the nose of the engine and a duck's bill. But it didn't move like a duck, attaining speeds over 100mph.
You will notice that the undercarriage of this steam locomotive has large wheels and drive rods. Like many trains in the 20's and 30's, the Bittern did not leave the factory streamlined. However, the public demanded "modern" and sleek designs that were all the rage at the time. To economically solve this impasse, the operators of the Bittern class of steam locomotives simply put a streamlined shell over the original black and unsightly boiler. And, voilĂ , it is transformed from an ugly duckling to a graceful blue swan.

About Chuck Mountain

Chuck Mountain

Chuck's creative background is wide and varied. He was a professional violinist, a published author, a multilingual graphic designer, a community college teacher, a Lutheran (ELCA) pastor, and a book designer (interior and covers). As a result, his work could be broadly categorized as digital art. His graphic design influences his digital art; and his digital art has features of his design work. In other words, they overlap. Someone put it this way: "What you do is not traditional art, and it isn't strictly graphic design. It's somewhere in-between." Chuck says he couldn't have said it better.
